Pining for The High and Lonesome Trail – 19th/20th November, Brudenell Social Club, Hyde Park Book Club, Left Bank

One of the things that is great about the whole Leeds music thing is that it refuses to be dictated to about when festival season is. Forget ending at the beginning of September, that’s when things get musically interesting in Leeds.

High and Lonesome is in its third year, and this time is taking place in the now legendary Brudenell Social Club, the reverential splendour of former church, now venue, Left Bank and the recent addition to the Leeds venue scene, Hyde Park Book Club.

The line-up features Leeds’ favourites, the uncategorisable Mi Mye and the acoustic stylings of Sam Airey, plus an intriguing blend of old and new, soft and loud, folky, posty… look, it will be mellow, melancholic and about as autumnal as you can get.

Headlining the weekend are two giants of wistfulness, the heartbreakingly beautiful Rhode Island-based Americana-ns The Low Anthem, whose melody and mellowness are like lullabies for a better time passed (which we can now call ‘pre-trump’), and gods amongst melancholics, I Like Trains, who are just about to release a soundtrack for their post-rockumentary, A Divorce Before Marriage (which is superb).

So leave 2016 to one side and set yourself adrift in a ship without a sail on a sea of no regrets and head down to High and Lonesome.
